Best Beaches And Coastal Spots Around Melbourne

Melbourne might not be a surf city, but it still does the coast better than many visitors expect. Follow the edge of Port Phillip Bay and you’ll find piers, beaches, skyline views, walking paths, sea breezes and easy places to spend a slower morning or afternoon.

The trick is knowing what kind of coastal day you want. Melbourne’s bayside spots are not all the same. Some are better for photos, some for walking, some for swimming, and some simply give you a good excuse to leave the CBD for a few hours.

Start With St Kilda

St Kilda is the obvious starting point because it is easy to reach and gives visitors a clear change of pace from the city centre. You get the beach, the pier, palm-lined paths, old seaside character and plenty of food and drink nearby.

It can be busy, especially on warm days, but that energy is part of the appeal. St Kilda is not a remote coastal escape. It is Melbourne’s classic city beach experience.

Walk Toward Elwood

The walk from St Kilda toward Elwood is one of the easiest bayside routes for visitors. It is flat, open and works just as well for a relaxed walk as it does for an easy run.

You’ll see locals walking dogs, cyclists, runners, beachgoers and people treating the foreshore as part of their normal day. It is a good reminder that Melbourne’s coast is not only for tourists — it is part of the city’s weekly rhythm.

Visit Brighton Beach

Brighton Beach is best known for its colourful bathing boxes. They are popular, heavily photographed and sometimes crowded, but they still make a strong visitor stop, especially if you want a classic Melbourne bayside photo.

On a clear day, the view back toward the city skyline is excellent. It also gives you a sense of how wide and open Port Phillip Bay feels compared with the tighter streets of the CBD.

Try Sandringham Or Black Rock

Further south, areas such as Sandringham and Black Rock offer a slightly calmer version of the bay. You’ll find cliff-top sections, beach access, coastal paths and more space than the busier St Kilda stretch.

These are good options if you want a longer walk or a less obvious bayside outing. They take a little more planning, but they show a different side of Melbourne’s coast.

Make It A Walking Or Running Day

Melbourne’s bayside paths are ideal for low-pressure movement. You do not need a major itinerary. Choose a section, walk or jog for a while, stop for coffee and head back when you’ve had enough.

Check the wind before you go. The bay can look calm from the city and still feel very different once you are out on the foreshore.
