Step back in time and explore the cobbled laneways, colonial pubs, and colourful past of Sydney’s oldest precinct with our Rocks Uncovered Walking Tour. This engaging 2-hour guided walk begins at Circular Quay and takes you deep into the heart of The Rocks — a neighbourhood where the city’s European story began, and where every stone seems to have a story.

From the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788 to the rum-soaked days of convicts, sailors, merchants, and revolutionaries, The Rocks has been the backdrop for some of Australia’s most dramatic moments — and its most enduring mysteries.

We begin with a stroll past Cadmans Cottage, one of Sydney’s oldest surviving residential buildings, built in 1816. Nestled near the harbour, it’s a tangible link to early colonial life and sets the stage for the stories ahead. From there, we wander up George Street, home to some of the city's oldest buildings, and stop at the Fortune of War, Sydney’s oldest continually licensed pub, where soldiers and sailors once drank before shipping out — sometimes for the last time.

As we delve into The Rocks’ hidden lanes, you’ll follow Suez Canal, a narrow alley once infamous for standover men, brothels, and brawls. It may look peaceful now, but its name was a cheeky nod to the “sewers” it once resembled. Here, you'll see remnants of the original sea wall, as your guide brings to life the chaos and commerce of Sydney’s early port.

Next, we make our way toward Argyle Cut — an impressive sandstone passage hand-carved by convicts, still bearing the scars of hard labour. As we ascend to Observatory Hill, you’ll be rewarded with sweeping harbour views and stories of the site’s role in colonial timekeeping, astronomy, and Sydney’s early military defenses. This spot, both beautiful and strategic, reveals how the British once watched over the settlement — and how the people below often resisted that control.

Other highlights include the Lord Nelson Hotel, Sydney’s oldest continuously licensed hotel still operating in its original building. With its Georgian façade and reputation for brewing, it captures the spirit of The Rocks — rough-edged, enduring, and full of character.

Throughout the walk, your guide will weave together tales of convicts, crime, corruption, resistance, and renewal. You’ll have plenty of chances to ask questions, take photographs, and soak in the old-world charm that defines this historic quarter.

The tour concludes back near Circular Quay, ideally placed for lunch, a harbour cruise, or a relaxing drink at one of the pubs you've just learned about. Whether you're a local rediscovering the past or a visitor seeing it for the first time, you’ll leave with a richer appreciation of The Rocks — not just a historic site, but the beating heart of Sydney’s story.
